The Weeks Act of 1911 appropriated money for purchasing lands cut-over by "timber barons" to create our national forests.
The Fall / Winter 2011 Chattooga Quarterly is now available! This quarterly’s topics include:
- Buzz’s comments on the “Cognitive Niche,” discussing how humans are unique in how we relate to the natural environment.
- Strengthening Our Mussells in the Chattooga River, highlighting the role freshwater mussells play in the Chattooga and what we can do to protect them.
- The Weeks Act Remembered, remarking on its 100 year anniversary.
- Oconostota, The Great Warrior of Chota, remembering one of the most influential chiefs among the Cherokees.

The Chattooga River Watershed
The Chattooga watershed spans for miles, as far north as Cashiers to as far south as Long Creek. Click the map below for an enlarged version.

The Chattooga River watershed is approximately 200,000 acres located in the tri-state area of northeast Georgia, western North Carolina, and northwestern South Carolina. The majority of the watershed is public land, managed by the US Forest Service.
