In 2005 Congressman Charlie Norwood re-introduced plans for a new interstate (originally proposed by former Representative Max Burns) which would run from Savannah, Georgia to Knoxville, Tennessee. The interstate, named for the 3rd Infantry, will serve "defense interests in our region." The proposed route will link a nuclear weapons complex in Oakridge, TN to the Savannah River Site, and will likely be used to transport dangerous nuclear materials.

The feasibily study for I-3 was to originally cost $400,000. The funding has since been increased to $1.32 million and specific routing guidelines have been removed from the bill. Interstate 3 is specified only as "extending from Savannah, Georgia, to Knoxville, Tennessee, by way of Augusta, Georgia (formerly the Savannah River Parkway in the State of Georgia)". On August 10, 2005 Bush approved the study as part of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act of 2005: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU).

Proposed Interstate 3 will cost billions of dollars to build and will only benefit road builders and oil companies. Proponents of I-3 say it will bring in new business, but the businesses that highways traditionally bring are gas stations and truck stops. The interstate will leave in its wake the destruction of natural beauty and ecological integrity, and local businesses that depend on tourism will suffer. Interstate 3 would be an environmental and economic disaster in the mountains of North Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee.

Tell your congressmen you don't want proposed Interstate 3!

Send letters by fax or email. Due to 9/11 security measures, postal mail to Congress will be delayed significantly. Stress that that I-3 from Savannah to Knoxville through North Georgia is not needed, will cause major environmental damage, and will be very expensive to build.
